February 2017 Camping Trip to Fortuna and Ferndale Northern California

Wow!.. hard to believe tomorrow is the first day of March. I always think winter goes by slow, then when we get to March it goes fast until summer, then it slows down and the holidays go by so fast.
So here we are made it home after taking our first camping trip of the year to Fortuna California and Ferndale California, a cute Victorian City along the Northern Coast of California.
We took a drive along the Lost Coast. Very beautiful drive along the coast.

This is the view on the Lost Coast Drive

We took up over 4 car spaces when we stopped to eat on the way home. LOL!

February 11, 2017 Brown Bread Recipe

Hello Friends
It's not raining today and is going to be a nice weekend!
There is some flooding and mess after all this rain and more to come they say.

I thought I would post my Brown Bread Recipe today

 My Finished Apron

You can read more about this Apron at the link below

In the 1880's they used 16 oz. vegetable cans, that seemed yucky to me so I used a bunt cake pan
Similar to this one sold at Macy's.

I put the bunt pan in a steamer and added water only up to the top of where the bunt pan would end.

I just used a vegetable and pasta steamer. Is there any other kind? I'm not sure.
These photos were taken before we moved in our old house, with our old granite and kitchen stove and backsplash with Warren Kimble wallpaper.

Now you put the foil covered bunt cake pan back in the steamer, I had it originally in the steamer to be sure it fit and I could get it back out.

Then you put it in the bowl and into the steamer

Here is what the Brown Bread looks like after it has been steamed.

Here is the brown bread all finished and ready to eat!

Recipe for the Steamed Brown Bread follows from Miss Parloa's New Cook Book of 1880.

2 cups buttermilk-if you don't have buttermilk take 2 tablespoons of the milk out after measuring the milk and add 2 tablespoons vinegar this will curdle and sour the milk.
1 cup all purpose flour
1 cup cornmeal
1 cup whole wheat flour
1 cup raisins
3/4 cup light or dark Molasses (I use Grandma's)
2 teaspoons baking soda
1 teaspoon salt

Grease and flour bunt pan or if you prefer you can use four 16 ounce vegetables cans (41/4 x 3 inches) or 7-inch tube pan or like me I used a bunt cake pan. I'm not sure if a tube pan is the same as a bunt pan or not? I would think a tube pan was shaped like a tube.

Beat all ingredients in a large mixer bowl on low speed, scraping bowl constantly, 30 seconds. Beat on medium speed, scraping bowl constantly 30 seconds. Fill cans or pan 2/3 full. Cover tightly with aluminum foil.

Place cans on rack in Dutch oven or steamer; pour boiling water into steamer to level of rack. Cover steamer. Keep water boiling over low heat or until wooden pick inserted comes out clean. About 3 hours, mine took about 1 hour and half. (Add boiling water during steaming if necessary.) Immediately unmold bread.

*If you are using self rising flour, decrease baking soda to 1 teaspoons and omit salt.

If you prefer to bake the bread, bake it at 325 F. Pour batter into greased 2-quart round casserole. Bake 1 hour.
And yes the bread is yummy!

I had this posted at my old blog. It's funny there was a lot of rain that year according to my post on January, 27, 2010

Also looks I posted my yummy Minestrone Soup Recipe that day.

February 9, 2017 Finished Vintage Apron, Clover Yo Yo Flowers, Shamrock, Kanzashi Flower Maker, Clover Heart Yo Yo Maker

Hello All,

Happy Thursday, it's another rainy day.

Many of the rainy days I work on my crafting, but some of them I just feel lazy. I do embroidery on those days and now I found these Clover Craft Yo Yo Makers and Flower Makers.
I have done many Yo Yo crafts in the past.
I have been making these this week instead of working on any quilts. I don't know why. I'm just getting used to making them, so they are not perfect yet!

I think I'm going to change the leaves on this, I have not attached them yet. I am not sure if I am making a wreath or decorating a new purse, tote or something like that.
Cute Hearts
Large Shamrock. I found this yo yo maker hard. It's hard to get them into the correct shape and the large Shamrock you have to have such a long thread, the thread has to be continuous without rethreading. I had a lot of knots. I think I will use thread conditioner next time.

I was searching for my old blog and I found it. I was trying to find table runners I made with the round yo-yo's. I did not use the clover product those times. I made my own yo-yo's pattern. It' just a circle and you sew around the circle and then cut the thread and pull up and gather and it makes a yo-yo. But I do think I love the clover yo yo makers. They are great because it's a lot faster the way it works with the cutting process and saving time is always great.

this is how my Vintage Apron Turned Out.
I did finish it this week. It was kind of hard to make. Well, not hard just a lot of work. But I love the end result. Look my little Effie has her head poking through. She loves everything I make and when I put things I make on the floor she jumps right on it. This time I would not let her stand on it, because I wanted to photograph the apron.

This will be last post for a few weeks or so. I am going camping and I need to get to work on my quilts.

Have a Happy Valentine's Day!

Happy February 2017! Rainy Days and Snow!

Hi All!

It's raining so much in California still. I don't know maybe we will float away. I was hearing that Southern California was sunny the other day. I was a wee bit jealous.

My husband and I went up the road about 20 minutes to Blue Canyon and played in the snow a bit. It was pretty and we had a fun time together and we brought our two dogs. Effie our black dog, she loves the snow, but Edee our Chihuahua does not really care for it on her paws. To cold for her!

I have my first of the year project started on my new quilt. I talked about it a few blog entries back.

I have my first patch done. The quilt is by Edyta Sitar and it's called Quilter's Patch.

I hope my next blocks turn out better than this one. I did not do a good job. I don't know what happened. Boo! Boo! However it is acceptable because there is so many blocks that it won't be noticed. I did not make it exactly as she did. In her's none of the leaves touched.

Below is the new quilt I am starting to work on Called Millie's Dresses (Pattern)? or something like that. It's going to be for my daughter's Birthday in August.

I think it's pretty darn cute. This pattern is by Lori Holt

Millie's Closet Fabric for the Dress Quilt

Here is the Another Quilt I plan on Making this year. This one is also by Lori Holt and is quilt fitting don't you think? That one is going to have to be after the Quilter's Patch and the Dress Quilt. So I am thinking in the summer maybe I can get started on the Camping one above. I can use up all my scraps in the squares. Our Camping Trips

Also on the sewing list is this Vintage Dress Pattern. 1940's Simplicity Pattern! Love it. I found this the other day.

I did this Valentine's Day Quilt in about a week and is quilted but I did not take a photo of it yet quilted. I need to. This is such a dark photo!

I am posting these to see how far I get this year. I think last year I made 5 quilts, table runners, many embroidery projects, hand as well as machine. Quite a few wall hangings/door hangings and whatever else I can't remember right now.

Well that was all January. Now I will see what February brings as we are into February right now. I know we are going camping this month to the coast. So I look forward to that.

Of course I did other projects as well, I don't just sew. I need to come back and post my Applesauce recipe, it's awesome. I love creating recipes.

I think we got a new President in January as well. I am happy about it. What about you? I'm so sorry that we have so much anger. Think good thoughts and stay positive!
Many Prayers as well need to be said.

Have a Wonderful Weekend!
